FACT SHEET ON TOM’S RECORD

 The Walkup/Republican campaign has gone negative!  And it looks like it will continue through the next five weeks.

 We believe that this is because they’ve had difficulty defending the record of his administration, and are doing so in an attempt to depress the turnout for the election. However, it is important that we continue to remind people of Tom’s exceptional record in office. You can help. Please send this e-mail to ten other friends who are voters in Tucson.

• Despite two horrible national recessions during his term (one of them brought down President Bush), Tom overcame economic trends and led the creation of over 13,000 net new jobs for Tucsonans.

• He was the first mayor to bring together all the public and private sector economic agencies and actors and fashioned a common strategy for the economy through the creation of GTEC.

• Tom was a full time mayor who worked 60 to 80 hours a week, and never took a vacation while in office.

• Sun Tran blossomed during Tom's term, adding 50% more passengers on the system between 1988 and 1992.

• During his term Tucson was named as the 3^rd Best-Run City in the nation by City and State Magazine.

• Due to his contributions to art and cultural development, Tucson received the “National Livability Award” from the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

• For his dedication to his job and his creativity, Tom was named as the “Best Public Official” in Tucson by readers' polls his last two years in office.

• Tom created the Metropolitan Education Commission to refocus on the problem of public education in Tucson.

• During Tom’s time in office, he helped to create consolidation with the county in a variety of areas, including job training and libraries.

• He championed the development of neighborhood plans to create a stable future for neighborhoods and the people who work with them.

• He fought TCE contamination in the water and food supply.

• Tom helped to create the arts district and worked on the stabilization of historic neighborhoods.

• Tom created campaign finance reform for Tucson years before it became popular around the country.
