 OLD BUSINESS:

Lego Club
:  David Kha reported that the club has 22 members so far and had their a grant approved for $10,000 to promote The Lords of Lego.  He said that Misha Chernobelskiy deserves a lot of credit for his work with The Lords; Misha spoke of the newsletter and upcoming events, including the LEGO Robot’s Day on May 26.

John B. Wright Elementary:  Principal Lisa Langford reported that Thursday’s the last day of school, and that summer school will start on June 3 and end on the 28th of June.   She said the school will provide breakfast and lunch to all neighborhood kids under 18, Monday through Friday the whole month of June, with breakfast starting at 7:30 a.m.  She announced that Wright promoted 93 fifth-graders, and that was particularly special for her since those kids had been her kindergarten class when she started at Wright.  Ms. Langford thanked the neighborhood group for our support.

Freestanding Building at Wright (Multi-Purpose Room):  Lisa Langford said that because of meetings held with all concerned, that the District, the school and neighbors agree that this building will be located in the same place as the current portable unit.

MidTown Library and Learning Center:  Martha Stewart reported that Andy Squire is still attempting to set up a meeting with members of the Pima County Board of Supervisors.  Steering Committee members may call us and suggest bringing a book to the site and sitting on the two abandoned couches there to read.  Brad Holland outlined developments on this issue.  He asked us all to call Ann Day and say it is important to move forward on this issue—to unbundle the funds from the other funding it’s been grouped and stalled with.  Andy Squire reported that he is providing all necessary data to Supervisors Day and Elias and that the next steering committee meeting is set for next week and hopefully will have good news.

Pima Street Re-Striping:  Andy Squire also reported that Councilman Fred Ronstadt has all the documentation on this issue, thanks to Martha Stewart’s excellent record-keeping.  Ronstadt will be meeting with the city manager to discuss this re-striping.  On question from the audience, Brad Holland outlined the history of this issue. Squire said it was unlikely that Pima Street could ever have speed bumps, but may get chicanes someday to modify traffic speed on this collector street.  Another resident was concerned about high speed driving along Belvedere and asked about speed bumps there.  Several residents spoke of concerns about high speeds on their streets.

Neighborhood Watch:  Marty Ittner thanked Andy Squire for his assistance in moving forward on this project.  Both Brad Holland and Andy Squire congratulated Marty Ittner for all her hard work to activate the watch.

 NEW BUSINESS:

Alltel Antenna:  Anna Marie Patti said Alltel proposes to place a 40-foot antenna between Fry’s and the Botanical Gardens.  There will be a meeting to discuss this on June 3 at 6:00 PM at the Botanical Gardens.  The Botanical Gardens want them to put the antenna in front of Fry’s because of the possible disruption of the birds.  Brad Holland said it would be beneficial for as many people as possible to attend, since 40 feet exceeds the maximum building height allowed in our neighborhood.

Guest Speakers: Mike and Curt from the Southern Arizona Bonsai Enthusiasts spoke of their involvement in this new club related to the old art.  They showed several examples of bonsai trees and described how they are able to train their native southwestern plants to grow they way they do.

Bailey’s Platinum Club Liquor License Application:  The Police feel upgrading the liquor license at this location is a bad idea, and Andy Squire said the unlawful behavior in and around this bar has been an ongoing problem and could have a bad effect on our neighborhood.  Anna Marie Patti moved that Brad write a letter from MidTown: the Garden District opposing this license upgrade, Martha Cooper seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

Summer MidTown Meetings:  Anna Marie Patti moved and Velma Hidden seconded that MidTown will not meet in June or July; the motion passed.

Carri Rondeau presented a gift certificate from MidTown to Martha Cooper in gratitude for all she has done for our neighborhood association, Misha Chernobelskiy presented Martha with her honorable Membership Card #1 in the Lego Club and Martha gave a short acceptance speech.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 PM on motion by Marty Ittner and second by David Kha.  Next meeting to be held August 20, 2002, 7 PM.
