                                            MIDTOWN MESSAGE

On behalf of the Officers of the Midtown Neighborhood Association, we would like to wish everyone a happy, safe, and peaceful New Year!

                                           DECEMBER SUMMARY

Our December meeting was spent celebrating the spirit of the season. Our celebration truly reflected the full diversity of our neighborhood. Samuil Bykov, a talented accordion player who recently moved with his family to Tucson from the Ukraine, opened the event. "Go for Baroque", a trio, was led by Brad Holland who plays piano and flute. He was accompanied by Devin Kim on the cello, and Greg Armstrong on the soprano sax and flute.

Navajo elder and long-time Tucson resident, Rex Redhouse, gave a ceremonial blessing. Mr. Redhouse sang a traditional song, and blessed the party with celestial smoke that wafted the cares and concerns of all off to the heavens.

Uncle Henry, honorary Mayor of Midtown, led the pledge of allegiance. After the pledge and the blessing, everyone enjoyed a buffet dinner, including a turkey prepared by David Kha and a ham provided by Carri Rondeau. Before singing carols, some of our neighbors were presented with small tokens of our appreciation for all they have done throughout the year in support of Midtown. Mikhail and Znanna Chernobelskiy and their two boys were acknowledged for their help in setting up the meetings each month with coffee, punch, and paper goods. They also went above and beyond when they volunteered for the Chili Fest. Uncle Henry was acknowledged for his commitment to regularly attending monthly meetings and for suggesting that we open the meetings with the pledge since the attack of 9-11.

                                SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATES

STEERING COMMITTEE:
The Midtown Steering Committee for the Library/Learning Center has been meeting once a month to discuss future plans. One project which we hope to incorporate is a nature trail which will be based (loosely) on the Freedom Trail in Boston. We hope to establish a "footprint" trail which will lead from the school to the library and another segment which will lead from the school area to the Botanical Garden together with some native plants and some signs. You might want to think about buying a "footprint" or two for our trail!

                                                ANNOUNCEMENTS

JFLOWER ANGEL OF THE MONTH:
This month's Flower Angel is Patricia Rosas. Patricia just moved into the neighborhood a short while ago. David Kha nominated Patricia because of her willingness to jump right in and help with the secretarial duties when needed and also for her help with our website.

WANTED: ANGEL WATCHERS: We know that there are a lot of great neighbors out there doing great things. We want to acknowledge and thank them for doing their part to make Midtown the place to live. Hal Burn's Flowerland provides a beautiful bouquet of flowers each month to our Flower Angel. When you spot an Angel on your block, please report it to Carri Rondeau at 795-1478.

MIDTOWN EVENT OF THE YEAR was held in the Garden District on New Year's Eve. We opened our home to revelers of the coming new year and much fun was had by all. Many thanks to all the neighbors who took time from their schedules to drop by and share a little new year cheer and quality time. We will do this again next year…it is just way too much fun!! Dave Lajoie and Paula Deyoe

PLANTS: Mary Propst has plants available to share with anyone who is interested. If you would like some free plants for your garden please call Mary at 327-6877.
