THE VICE PREZ SEZ
We had a good presentation by a group of three City employees who have volunteered to help get the word out throughout the City about the May 16th City Bond Election. There will be seven questions on the ballot and voters will be asked to vote on each question. We expect to have someone at our April meeting who will be able to go into more details regarding the drainage facilities improvement and how it relates to our horrible flooding problem in our area. Be sure to attend the April meeting if you want more information.
MARCH MEETING SUMMARY
The focus of this months meeting was on the Bond Election to be held on May 16th. John Hogan of the City of Tucson Bond information Group provided handouts and showed a video explaining the several bond proposals that will be on the ballot. This election is important to Midtown because one of the things that will be voted on is funding for our library-learning center. Pat Correlle of the City reported that the Midtown library was indeed included in the bond, though not mentioned specifically in the handouts. Neighbors also expressed concern over the drainage problems experienced here in Midtown. Part of the Bond money will be spent to perform unspecified work on the Columbus Wash that runs through Midtown.
UPDATES
John B. Wright: Lisa Langford reports that the TUSD ground crew has agreed to put curbing around the Nature Park. This will help keep the Bermuda grass from invading the area. John B. Wright is the first in line to receive air-conditioning. Funding will be secured in April and construction will start in the fall. The Cinco de Mayo Celebration is in the planning stages. It will be held on Friday, May 5th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Lisa is looking for volunteers to help with food, games, decorations, and planning. If you would like to help out, please call the school at 318-2290.
Computer Club: David Kha reports that there are seven computer stations available at Liverpool Computers for Midtown residents to use. There is no charge to use the computers and three of the stations have Internet access. David also offers six, one-hour computer lessons. Call David at 323-8278 for more information.
Bike Club: David is working with members of the Mormon Church to help build bikes. If you or someone you know would like a free bike, call David Kha at 323-8278.
Green Retrofit Program: Anna Marie Patti reports that the Midtown Green Retrofit Program is now in the public improvement phase. Anyone interested in seeing the program in action should walk (we are trying to discourage driving) over to Desmond and Justin Lanes to see the new islands, traffic circles, and chicanes. They will soon be filled with trees and sculptures. Thanks to the efforts of Tucson Metropolitan Ministries, Tucson Institute for Sustainable Communities, City of Tucson Special Projects, the Transportation Department, Ward 6 Friends, and our own neighbors, we are making Midtown just a little more safe and beautiful. I sincerely want to thank everyone for all their hard work. Soon Bellevue Street, the last block of our pilot program, will benefit from similar improvements.
THANKS!
Flower Angel of the Month goes to David Kha from Martha Cooper. David does so much to support the youth of our neighborhood. He has devoted so much of his time to the Bike Club and the Computer Club, and he still has time to help out with any neighborhood activities that happen to be going on from planting trees to making tamales!
