MIDTOWN NEWS           June 1997

 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT.

I expect to be out of town for part of the summer, but the monthly meetings will

Continue as always. In June we will try once more to have our program on Restorative

Justice as presented by the Juvenile Court. We always need rain, but let’s hope we don’t have another gully-washer for our June meeting.

 ANGEL OF THE MONTH…

Goes out from Chrissy Colombino, a teacher at Wright School to Play it Again Sports.

They donated a much needed baseball glove for a left-handed player who is so appreciative that he does not have to try to learn to throw right-handed. Midtown’s Guardian Angel goes out to Carrie Rondeau who pulled together the June 1 Stand For Children celebration at Wright School Park. Carrie we love you. Carrie extends a special

Thanks to these local businesses: Providence Corporation, P.A.C.T., Pure Water Technologies, Pure Water Nature’s Way, Astrojump, Mailboxes, etc., and E-MEDia For free D.J.). Let them know that you appreciate their Stand For Children. Carrie also thanks

Her Angel Helpers Chris Wallace for supervising the jumping castle and Dee DiNota  for

Bringing the supervising games, along with countless volunteers.

 WE STAND FOR CHILDREN.

Every day of the year in Midtown. Carrie Rondeau will report at our June meeting on food and shoes collected for neighborhood kids during the month of June. Call Carrie at

795-1478 if you would like to donate sport shoes or food for the Wright School food bank for neighborhood kids. Martha Cooper and Kathi Finfrock have secured 20 summer

jobs for neighborhood kids aged 14 and up starting June 9 and lasting 7 weeks. The kids

will be conducting a survey of neighborhood needs, they will help build the Wright School Park, they will be building Midtown’s  first Model Community Garden on North Street, and they will be learning and teaching bicycle repair at Midtown’s Sunday Bicycle

Clinic. For more information on the needs survey, call Martha Cooper at 327-4733. To find more about the bike clinic or community garden, call David Kha at 323-8278. Lisa

Langford and the wonderful teachers and staff of Wright School pulled off another celebration for kids and their families for Cinco de Mayo. Over 300 families joined in the

Celebration. Paula Barry reports that crowds of kids and their families enjoyed clowns,

Silly hats, face painting, a variety of fun booths and games , lots of good food , and entertainment provided by different Wright classes. Lisa has announced that they plan to do it again on Halloween. For more information, or to help out at the Halloween bash, call Lisa at 318-2290. April Baison reported  on the Kids’ Nature Park at our May meeting. The kids have made a 3-d model of the park, which is on display at Wright School. The nature park will be fully installed by next fall. And of course Midtown’s

Summer Soccer playoffs are going strong, along with Chess Club and Computer Club. Call David at 323-8278 for more information on these activities and to learn how you can participate.

THE SECRET OF OUR SUCCESS is simple enough…just focus on the positive. Christina Rosetti is very excited about Midtown’s secret formula for success—and she

Wants to help us make it even better. Christina is a neighbor who has volunteered to begin an “asset mapping” of the talents of Midtown residents, For more information call

Her at 318-6907. More later.

 SPEAKING OF SUCCESS.

Midtown Neighborhood Association has been awarded a $150,000 CDBG grant to begin setting up our Neighborhood Library/Learning Center. Anna Marie Patti (881-0244) and Martha Cooper (327-4733) are hard at work setting up an implementation   plan. The dynamic duo are on a roll.

PET (POOP) PEEVES…as mentioned at May’s meeting…It was suggested that neighbors walking their dogs please carry along a little poop sack with which to collect

Their doggie droppings. Drop the droppings in the nearest dumpster—we’ll all thank you.

You see the ball, you hit the ball. They hit the ball, you catch the ball. You catch the ball,

You throw the ball. That’s it.
