MIDTOWN NEWS
Our November neighborhood meeting will be a very important one. We will be voting on the proposed bylaws. We have made some changes in our original bylaws and the proposed changes were presented at the October neighborhood meeting. A complete copy of the proposed bylaws will be available at the November meeting for your preview. They will also be posted on our website www.thegardendistrict.org. Please feel free to contact any Midtown officer if you have any questions or concerns. Their names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses can be found on the back of this newsletter.
OCTOBER SUMMARY
We had another good turn out for our October meeting. Keep up the enthusiasm! It is great to see new neighbors at each meeting. We had two guest speakers this month. Rebecca Wending, the community relations’ speaker, for the Red Cross emergency preparedness and distributed handouts describing these procedures and Red Cross services. If you would like copies of these handouts please contact the Red Cross at 318-6740.
Grace Evans, a representative of Citizens for Tucson Future and professional land use planner, spoke concerning Proposition 401. Proposition 401 presents a questions to the City voters as to whether the 2001 General Plan as updated and revised by the Mayor and Council should be ratified by the voters. The 2001 General Plan has 14 sections or "elements", including 4 new elements and an implementation component. More information regarding the 2001 General Plan may be obtained from the Planning Department at City Hall or from the City’s website by clicking on "Plan for Tucson’s Future" on the left side of the homepage.SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATES
JOHN B. WRIGHT: Lisa Langford reports that there are many volunteer opportunities available to Midtown residents. You can collect pop-tops for soda cans for the Ronald McDonald House. You can use your Fry’s VIP card. For every $50,000 in receipts, John B. Wright gets $500. You can also save box tops from General Mills Products. Each one is worth $.10.
Larissa Peterson, PTA president, reports that PTA newsletter will be posted on the Neighborhood Association website. The main goal of the PTA for this year is to improve communication. PTA meeting are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, all are invited to attend.
SPECIAL EXPERTISE: Carol Clark from the Ward 6 office reports that at the last meeting a proposed time line was given to steering committee members.
YOUTH AND SENIORS: David Kha reports that the Bike Club is selling Entertainment books again this year. The books cost $35.00. If you would like to support the Bike Club by buying the book, please call David at 323-8278. Lego Club is meeting on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month at 1817 N. Justin Lane.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
FLOWER ANGEL OF THE MONTH: This month’s Flower Angel is Carol Clark. Martha Cooper wanted to nominate Carol, who is Fred Ronstadt’s aid. Carol has been a tremendous asset for us and is really devoted to our cause. She has worked tirelessly on the Library/Learning Center and never misses a neighborhood meeting.
Our youth jobs program is in full action again this year at Wright Elementary School. We have 10 high school age students who are tutoring and assisting at the school under the auspices of the Tucson Youth Development Office. Our local supervisor is Chris Ryan who was last year PTA president. She is doing a great job and we are pleased to have her.
"Inspiring Smiles", a project in the vision of generosity is underway in Tucson now! This is a community-based project created by C. Joy Strobel out of her participation in the Self Expression and Leadership Program, one course in a curriculum for living offered through the Landmark Education Corporation. Though the generosity of local dentists, orthodontists, and prostedontists, our goal is to treat 700 children whose parents could not afford this work otherwise.
